Saving lives with ZimFirst. Digital Health Records Save Lives. Welcome to the Future with ZimFirst.

Our healthcare system is in a comatose. A lot of work will be needed after the authors of Zimbabwe’s misery are going. We have work to do collectively. Nyika Vanhu. Vanhu Ndonyika. #ZimFirst.

ZimFirst government priority will be refurbishing and retooling the Zimbabwe Healthcare system and ensuring that Healthcare Staff are well numerated. In this process a ZimFirst government will provide a first world healthcare system that will be driven technology. A center piece of the modernization of Zimbabwean Healthcare system will be the introduction of a private enterprise run electronic health record (EHR). The EHR system is already in use modern economies is a digital version of a patient’s paper chart. EHRs are real-time, patient-centered records that make information available instantly and securely to authorized users. While an EHR does contain the medical and treatment histories of patients, a ZimFirst government intends to bring an EHR system that is built to go beyond standard clinical data collected in a healthcare provider (hospitals, clinics, Pharmacies, doctor’s Office etc.) and can be inclusive of a broader view of a patient’s care. Lives have been lost due to the inefficiencies that are inherent with the use of paper records. EHR is the solution because it will provide accurate, up-to-date, and complete information about patients at the point of care in real time. In addition, they enable safer, more reliable prescribing thus saving lives.

Things to know about the technology driven HER system is that they can:

  • Contain a patient’s medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, immunization dates, allergies, radiology images, and laboratory and test results
  • Allow medical practitioners and patients access to fact based (also known as evidence-based) tools that healthcare providers can use to make decisions about a patient’s care

  • Automate and streamline the workflow of healthcare providers (both government and private)

One of the key features of the ZimFirst government’s EHR is that the health information can be created and managed by authorized providers in a digital format capable of being shared with other providers across more than one health care organization. The EHRs will be built to share information with other health care providers and organizations – such as laboratories, specialists, medical imaging facilities, pharmacies, emergency facilities, and school and workplace clinics. In summary EHRs contain information from all healthcare providers involved in a patient’s care.

  • On point, some of these things will actually make health care delivery efficient when some visits a doctor or hospital thus reducing waiting periods. Same application needs to be aligned to birth records as well a identification records where a birth certificate and id a issued simultaneously. What this does is reduces workload and cost centres cut back on government expenditure as well.
